Challenge
Primely located on the corner of Adelaide and Wharf Street in Brisbane’s CBD, WMK were engaged to reactivate the dark and tired entrance to the commercial building at 340 Adelaide Street.
Focusing primarily on the exterior of the building, the project’s main objectives were to reposition the forecourt and facade to attract and retain tenants.
Solution
WMK’s design sought to unlock the subtropical elements of the building while opening up the forecourt to create a welcoming entrance. The design highlights the building’s existing balconies and unique opportunities for interaction with the outdoors by infusing the forecourt with natural materials and greenery.
Jagged garden beds brimming with tropical plants reflect the form of neighbouring cliffs and surround the forecourt. Large pillars have been cased in bespoke concrete tiles, dramatically changing the feel of the space and linking the existing building to the refurbished entrance. Warm timber panels halo the entryway and follow on to the ascending balconies creating striking shadows that evolve throughout the day.
Outcome
The design takes advantage of the 340 Adelaide Street’s wide corner positioning to not only refresh the building but reinvigorate the surrounding area.
The considered use of quality finishes adds new layers of sophistication to the existing building and revitalises the space creating an attractive and contemporary entryway and meeting place.
