SHANGHAI

Challenge

WMK has been engaged to develop the interior of a five-star hotel in close proximity to a new regional exhibition centre and only five kilometres south-west of Hongqiao Shanghai International Airport. The hotel is part of a major development that will be surrounded by retail, fine dining, culture, and leisure.

As the hotel is already advanced in progress, the challenge is to ensure the interiors follow the design principles already set by the architecture. The architecture has been designed around strong lineal angular lines that follow the natural environment.

Solution

The interior design reinforces these strong angular lines and the architectural language, with the intention of creating a well-considered and cohesive hotel which strengthens and underpins the architectural ideals. The interiors create a sense of welcoming and warmth on arrival by providing a variety of spaces whilst maintaining a consistent look and feel.

A sense of transparency has been introduced through considering the Feng Shui significance and implications, providing a discreet sense of security and reflecting the hotel’s brand and culture.

Outcome

Identifying with the target market, WMK’s interior concept will create a sense of luxury and richness for the hotel’s intended guests. The spaces flow seamlessly from the reception, through the various restaurants and bars, through the meeting and conference facilities, and into the guest rooms.

By utilising a finishes palette that is neutral in tone along with a natural material selection that complements the external colour scheme, WMK has added a layer of textural feel that will create a sense of warmth and belonging.
