BOUTIQUE HOTEL CONCEPT

SYDNEY

Challenge

WMK was asked to breathe new life into an existing three-star hotel into a boutique, Deco-inspired four-star hotel for a rebrand and relaunch.

The refurbishment will encompass 50 guest rooms, bathrooms, new food and beverage facilities and reception. The primary challenge was to work with existing rooms which were small and narrow.

Solution

The WMK team was inspired by the building’s past as a Royal Doulton warehouse and showroom, drawing on the design qualities of porcelain. The design references the building’s Art Deco heritage through form, contrast and furniture selection.

A retained central stair will incorporate a decorative perforated metal screen with integrated lighting to connect the public spaces and add drama while concealing necessary services. Meanwhile, in guest rooms, the designers paid particular attention to detailing and joinery to create special spaces for guests.

Outcome

The outcome will be a refined boutique hotel offering that is unique to this part of Sydney and will help to rejuvenate the area.
