MERCHANT HOUSE

333 KENT ST, SYDNEY

CHALLENGE

WMK was engaged to design an extension and upgrade to the existing and tired commercial building located in a prime location on Kent St in Sydney’s CBD. Originally built in the 1880s, the client was looking to create a premium A-Grade building, targeting a 5 star NABERS energy rating.
The brief called for an additional 7 floors, replacement of the existing commercial facade whilst retaining the heritage facade. Views and daylight to the tower were to be maximised with the ground floor experience to be reconsidered as an activated lobby with retail and lounge.

SOLUTION

The design preserves the building’s historic charm while integrating modern functionality and sustainability. WMK developed a cohesive facade strategy that expressed the tower as one unique architectural form.  Existing structure and cores were to be extended up with the building gaining a new lift and all new amenities in place of the on floor plant room.  Bike storage was added to the ground floor carpark.  A double storey terrace was designed to the top of the heritage facade that also houses sophisticated end-of-trip facilities and outdoor co-working spaces. Floor-to-ceiling glazing affords abundant natural light and views.

OUTCOME

WMK’s design strategy has thoughtfully re-imagined the building into a sustainable and innovative workplace with wellness floor and ground floor retail within Sydney’s iconic commercial precinct.
