MERCHANT HOUSE

333 KENT ST, SYDNEY

CHALLENGE

WMK was engaged to design an extension and upgrade to an existing tired commercial building in a prime location in Sydney’s CBD. The client is looking to have an A-Grade commercial building that also targets a 5 star NABERS energy rating.
The brief called for an additional 7 floors, replacement of the existing commercial facade whilst retaining the heritage facade. Views and daylight to the tower were to be maximised with the ground floor experience to be reconsidered as an activated lobby with retail and lounge.

SOLUTION

WMK’s design solution developed a cohesive facade strategy that expressed the tower as one unique architectural form.  Existing structure and cores were to be extended up with the core gaining a new lift and all new amenities in place of the on floor plant room.  Bike storage is to be added to the ground floor carpark.  A double storey terrace has been designed to the top of the heritage facade that also houses the state of the art end of trip facilities and outdoor co-working spaces. Floor to ceiling glazing affords abundant natural light and views.

OUTCOME

WMK’s design strategy has re-imagined an iconic building into an inspired new workplace for the next generation of creators and entrepreneurs. The elegant facade design acts as a counterpoint to the heritage facade below.
The offering on both the ground floor and terrace levels make for a development that celebrates the life of the working city.
