Challenge
WMK was engaged as architects and interior designers to create a new reception and administration building for NBCS – a leading independent school in Sydney.
The brief was unique – the space was required to enhance the welcoming experience, be elegant without being opulent, have ‘wow’ factor, and signal that NBCS is a fun place to work – all while embodying the school’s values.
Solution
The brief requested light, height, space, green elements, and earthy materiality. WMK delivered a light-filled space, with double height voids and spaces, natural ventilation, garden outlooks, in an environment crafted from glass, concrete, steel, and timber.
The team moved from a traditional closed office environment to open plan activity-based working, with only two managers remaining in offices.
The General Manager’s office overlooks the school – connecting the General Manager with the students and the heart of the school.
The new building features no staff lunch room – instead, teachers are encouraged to mingle with students in the school cafeteria.
Outcome
WMK’s use of earthy materials, combined with intricate detailing, helped to achieve the school’s goal of a reception that felt elegant without being opulent.
The new reception and administration spaces echo NBCS’ unique approach to learning and closely embody the organisation’s values.
