Challenge
To transform a dilapidated office building on the city fringe into an educational facility for international students carrying out their foundation year in Brisbane.
The additional facility would aid International Education Services in increasing student numbers and their prospective revenue.
The challenge of this project was to create a functional learning space with a unique and fresh design approach intended to improve the marketing potential for International Education Services abroad within tight budgetary constraints.
Solution
WMK created an inviting and dynamic flow of space through the opening out of the reception area and student lounge spaces. The design of the student lounge space is young, vibrant and colourful with carefully selected furniture intended to support student use of the space for studying and collaboration for limited periods of time.
The arrangement of furniture zones and exposed ceilings create an illusion of greater volume of space.
Graphic expressions and photographs of different world locations, establish connections to students’ home countries, while graphics of the Brisbane River throughout the formal learning areas link the space to local Brisbane culture.
Outcome
The increased space has allowed International Education Services to increase student numbers and grow their business.
The 1,500sqm educational facility has been well received by staff and students.
The student lounge is not only used by students who attend classes in the new fit-out but has also attracted students from the original facility.
