CHALLENGE
Campion College needed to expand their Toongabbie campus to meet growing requirements to deliver their liberated arts education programs. WMK was engaged to develop the design and deliver the latest stage of the Franck & Lohsen Masterplan, a large addition to the existing heritage building in addition to the student housing buildings.
WMK were required to work collaboratively with the interstate project stakeholder group and the head contractor to develop the concept design, including full interior design and architectural documentation for construction, working within the projects time and budget constraints.
SOLUTION
A three-storey extension to the main existing heritage building provides basement parking, a grand two-story library space with spectacular double height void with stained glass skylight, large dining hall and a variety of academic teaching spaces. Four new student houses were added to the two existing houses and complete the student accommodation part of the campus masterplan.
Extension of the existing road network and additional on-site parking is provided to support the new buildings and future masterplan elements.
OUTCOME
The new library wing, which seamlessly ties in with the existing heritage building and its architectural language has become a social and learning hub for the Campion College campus. The building interiors deliver a contemporary design with a timeless elegance through careful detailing and the choice of materials. The new library wing has set the benchmark for design and quality for the realisation of the remainder of the campus masterplan.
