CHALLENGE
WMK were engaged by the Royal Botanical Gardens & Domain Trust to repurpose the Robert Brown Building (named after colonial botanist Robert Brown), which was purpose built as the National Herbarium. The relocation of the National Herbarium to Mount Annan, created an opportunity to repurpose the original building. The Brown Building will be home to a variety of user groups, all with varied needs and desired outcomes. The building was originally built in 1984, with Level 4 as a later addition and subsequently has some building maintenance issues. The balancing act of successfully fulfilling as many of the desired outcomes as possible within a strict budget was considered throughout the design process.
SOLUTION
WMK set up a series of briefing workshops to explore the objective outcomes of each user group, including RBG Trust, Executive team (who’s work environment is to be in the building), ReCER (who require a combination of labs, workspace, workshops, and general workplace facilities), Exhibition and Events team and facilities managers. WMK developed a strategy that weighed up user groups objectives against tight budget. Working closely with consultants during the design process, allowed for majority of outcomes to be achieved.
OUTCOME
The outcome provided flexible solutions, allowing varied user groups to maximise the site. The result is set to generate revenue, increase user experience for both visitors and staff, and most importantly showcase who the Royal Botanic Gardens are and what they do, with a strong emphasis on ReCER and their environmental conservation and study.
