The Cutaway at Barangaroo Reserve

Sydney

WMK worked with Lendlease and the Barangaroo Delivery Authority as the architectural design consultant for the cultural space, ‘the Cutaway’, at Barangaroo Reserve – a key component of this landmark 22 hectare site on the western edge of Sydney’s CBD.

Responsible for briefing, design development, consultant coordination, and documentation, WMK coordinated with an team of specialist consultants to deliver this iconic project.

The Cutaway is a flexible shell space, 6,500sqm in footprint and capable of containing three floors, carved within the headland with a purpose built green-roof forming the top of the new park.

This flexible multi-use events and cultural space features 14 metre high ceilings and a dramatic sandstone cliff face running the length of the interior, illuminated by skylights set into the landscaping above.

The Cutaway has already been tested by a variety of public and private events, playing host to more than 30,000 people during the Sydney Festival in 2016.

The project included a spectacular outdoor forecourt overlooking the harbour with future café and lift access to the the Cutaway below.

A car parking facility suitable for 300 vehicles was also constructed below the Cutaway.

WMK was delighted to be part of the design and delivery team on this significant Australian project.
